How can an Educational Psychologist help?

Educational Psychologists use a variety of tools and techniques to identify a child or young person's strengths and needs, and have expertise in pin-pointing evidence-based interventions to help them to flourish.  Educational Psychologists work with children and young people aged 0-25, and whilst all young people may benefit through working with a psychologist, we commonly support children with the following needs...

Specific learning needs (e.g. Dyslexia)

Demand-avoidance

Social communication needs (e.g. Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ASD)

Attention differences including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Nurturing Growth

Low self-esteem

Children who have experienced trauma, bereavement or loss

Emotional regulation and distressed behaviours

Emotional and mental health needs including anxiety and Emotionally-Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

'Educational Psychologists are 'hope-catchers'; when everyone else is finding out what a child cannot do, EPs explore what they can do and what support they need to be the very best versions of themselves'

Educational Psychology Today (2017)

Psychologist for Children

ASSESSMENTS

I provide an in-depth understanding of the child's strengths and needs through a range of assessment tools including cognitive assessment and dynamic assessment. Assessments are chosen by the Educational Psychologist based on the child's presentation and a comprehensive report is written, detailing the support they will require.  These reports can be used as evidence to support the application for an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Teen Psychologist

CONSULTATION

Consultations are offered to involve those who know the child best (usually parents/carers and a class teacher or SENCo) in a collaborative meeting to gain a shared understanding of the child's needs and agree the best way forward to ensure success.  These meetings usually last around 1 hour and can be remote or in-person. This service includes a short summary report, and can provide a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to an in-depth Educational Psychologist assessment.

Public Speaker
